“He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently against that house, and could not shake it, for it was founded on the rock.” (Luke 6:48; NKJV)
Listen to the Devotional!
Stability is something that is important to everyone. We like to be connected to things that are dependable. We like to know that we can have confidence in the things we believe to be true. In a world of government politics, it is very common for leaders to change their own views based on society’s views, and truth is determined by the opinions of society. What is considered right and wrong becomes defined by the world.
This is not the case with God
“For I am the LORD, I change not…” (Malachi 3:6; KJV)
In fact, God and His wisdom are so unchanging that He wanted His believers to know this so strongly that He made a promise in His own name.
“Thus God, determining to show more abundantly to the heirs of promise the immutability of His counsel, confirmed it by an oath,” (Hebrews 6:17; NKJV)
Immutable is an uncommon word that means unchangeable. So, God’s wisdom will be the same today as it was yesterday and as it will be in the future. What God says is truth, and when He speaks of a future hope, it’s a certainty. Continuing in Hebrews 6, “that by two immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we might have strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope set before us. This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which enters the Presence behind the veil, where the forerunner has entered for us, even Jesus, having become High Priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.” (Hebrews 6:18-20; NKJV)
When we experience anxiety about the future, it can feel like we are in the chaos of a stormy ocean. When we trust in God, even though we are still surrounded by the waves of anxiety, we can anchor ourselves to the rock of God. We can find peace knowing that God cares for us and that we have a hope. He doesn’t prevent storms from happening in our lives, but He does carry us through them.
Jesus’ parable about where we build our houses is a perfect example of this.
“He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently against that house, and could not shake it, for it was founded on the rock.” (Luke 6:48; NKJV)
God’s promise for us has never changed. He has always wanted us to be a part of His family from the very beginning. What He has promised can be depended on as certain as the sun will rise tomorrow. God is no human politician; His words can be trusted as truth.
“That we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting…” (Ephesians 4:14; NKJV)
“It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man. It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in princes.” (Psalm 118:8-9; KJV)
The promise that God has made from the beginning is still the hope of tomorrow.
“But as truly as I live, all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the LORD.” (Numbers 14:21; KJV)
When God sent His son, Jesus, into the world, it was a big step closer to God’s promises being fulfilled. God promised salvation from sin and death through belief in Jesus’ death and resurrection. For the whole earth to be filled with the glory of God, He has promised that His son will return to the earth to establish a righteous kingdom.
“He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: And he shall reign over the house of Jacob forever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.” (Luke 1:32-33; KJV)
While we wait for the peace of a changed world to come, we have an opportunity to be a part of God’s family now. We can seek His unchangeable wisdom and make it our own. We can be a lighthouse to others when they are overcome in a storm of uncertainty.
“The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; My God, my strength, in whom I will trust; My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.” (Psalm 18:2; NKJV)
God is unchangeable, and His promises are true.
